The Pastor's Pen!

Happy Valentine’s Day! February is a time to celebrate with those we Love. The Great Commandment is to Love God with all our Heart, Soul, & Mind, & to Love our neighbor as ourselves. In order to Love God with ALL our Heart, Mind, Soul & Strength, we have to move from “Believing” God to Knowing God to Loving God.
Jesus said to Love God with All your Heart, Soul & Mind. Love God with All your Being; Heart, Mind & Soul, with everything. God is your Heavenly Father; He would do anything for you. God’s Name means “Everything.” Is He Everything to you? You can’t say you Love God & not come to Church, to Worship & to Learn.
Jesus also said to Love our Neighbor as much as we Love God. Love God First & Foremost, “seek ye first the Kingdom of God.” Love your neighbor like someone who is worth Saving, Jesus died for them too. Love is shown by our actions; actions without Love is worthless. Our work is not as important as people, or our compassion & concern for our neighbors. You can’t Love your Neighbor if you don’t know them, & do something for them.
Jesus told us to Love yourself, you are a Special Creation of God. Loving God produces Joy, Peace, hatred of Sin & Love for others in our hearts, then displayed in our lives. Loving your Neighbor produces concern for their spiritual condition. But Love Yourself, because God Created you, He Saved you & Adopted you into His family. Love what God has Created, then Recreated, in His image & now wants to use for His Glory. If you don’t Love Yourself, you can’t fully Love other people or Love God with All your Heart.

Now abide Faith, Hope & Love, the greatest of these is LOVE.

    Carol's Notes

A few days ago I got so fretted over how messy one of my kitchen cabinets had become. First of all you have to understand I don’t have as much cabinet space for kitchen items as it appears. There is the usual kitchen “junk” drawer, a locked drawer for important papers and another drawer and large lower cabinet I’ve lost to fishing items Bill doesn’t want to store in the basement. On the top shelf of the larger upper cabinet were cookbooks some of which we hadn’t used in years. I took all of them out of the cabinet and began to straighten and organize. In just a few minutes the cabinet was much better organized and now included just three of the cookbooks we use more frequently. I closed the cabinet feeling good about what I had accomplished only to find a stack of old books still on the kitchen table. I wanted to just toss them all in the trash but decided I would glance through them. I’m so thankful I took the time to check them out. Two of them had belonged to my mother and hidden inside one of them were several recipes in her handwriting. Several of the recipes sounded really good and I can’t wait to try them on my family. I jumped for joy when I found her chocolate Strada recipe. My mouth began to water as I remembered how good it tasted and what a tradition it became at family dinners. I can hardly wait to make this special treat for my family - it might just edge out the chocolate éclair cake which is a family favorite.
I would never have found these treasures if I hadn’t taken time to open the books and see what was inside. Isn’t that also true of our Bibles? I hope your Bible is not hidden away and sitting unused like my cookbooks. I hope it is falling apart and well marked after years of use like one of my mother’s bibles I brought home when she died. It truly is a book divine, full of precious treasures, words to chide us, to show our Savior’s love, words to guide and guard, words of comfort in distress, promises of joy to come and so much more. Open it – I promise a special treasure is waiting for you.
As February comes with its heart-shaped boxes of candy, flowers and sweethearts – the month of love – let’s not forget as Paul tells us in Colossians 3:14 to “let love guide your life, for then the whole church will stay together in perfect harmony” (Living Bible).
Have a fabulous February and as always...........

WINGS January Project

WINGS has selected the Denver Recovery House in Lynchburg for their February project.
Denver Recovery House is a home affiliated with Horizon Mental Health. It is a home for women to go to once released from a drug rehab center or jail. Its main goal is to help individuals get back into society, on to finding a job and moving to their own place. Horizon funds the home but does not purchase specific items for the women, which can range in age from 18 to 65 or older. Their goal is to give them a second chance at feeling like a woman. They come to this home with only the clothes on their back.
