The Pastor's Pen!

“Blessed is the Nation whose God is the Lord!” (Psalm 33:12) The United States is very Blessed. God has Blessed us so much; from the founding of this country, through all the wars & struggles & up to modern technology. We are the Greatest Country in the world & still the best country to live in.
We sing Patriotic Hymns, ”God Bless America”, “America the Beautiful”, “My Country `Tis of Thee”, & the Star-Spangled Banner, asking God to Bless us; Will God continue to answer our Prayers?
We need to turn back to God, “If My people, will Pray”. (2 Chron 7:14) We have enough Programs, in Congress, in Schools & in our Churches. We need more Prayer! The early Church Prayed at Pentecost & God did a mighty work, 3,000 souls were saved (Acts 2). They Prayed for boldness & God shook the whole house, 2,000 more souls saved (Acts 4). Any Work of God begins with Prayer!
We need to turn back to God in our daily lives. We sing the Hymn “Living for Jesus” & then go out & live any way we want. Solomon said, “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach (disgrace) to any people”. (Prov 14:34) America is now a land of immorality, violence, broken homes, lack of respect for life from abortions to euthanasia, & murder. Righteousness, a right relationship with God, holy living, must begin with Christians.
We need to turn back to God in our Churches. Preaching of the Bible, God’s Holy Word, will turn people back to God. Preaching of the Cross, where God’s Son Died, produces a passion for lost souls. Preaching on Hell shows the high cost of being lost. “anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.” God has Blessed us & will Continue to Bless us, as long as we Keep “Looking unto Jesus, the Author & Finisher of our Faith!”

    Carol's Notes

One can only imagine how Francis Scott Key must have felt when he witnessed the British barrage of Fort McHenry in September of 1814. He is quoted as saying “It seemed as though mother earth had opened and was vomiting shot and shell in a sea of fire and brimstone.” As darkness arrived he saw red erupting in the night sky and he was certain the British would win. In the clearing smoke of “the dawn’s early light” he saw the American flag, not the British Union Jack, flying over the fort. What an amazing sight that must have been. He put his thoughts on paper and “The Star-Spangled Banner”, our National Anthem, was born.
Most of us have not seen our flag, the “Stars and Stripes”, in quite the same setting as Key did. I do hope, however, that there have been times when the sight of our flag has moved us emotionally. Let me share a couple of personal experiences with you. I remember the fear in my heart when I learned my son was being sent to the Gulf War. I wore a heart-shaped flag pin with two small yellow ribbons hanging from it every day he was gone. Piedmont Label put up a flag pole and began flying the flag during Desert Storm because several employees had sons serving there. What an emotional experience it was to see that flag rise to the top of that flag pole for the first time.
The sight of a large American flag flying when you’re in another country is also very moving. Such was the case when we visited the American Cemetery and Memorial in Florence, Italy. It was such an awe-inspiring place and the American flag waving high above that Memorial was a breath-taking reminder of the price paid by these soldiers for my freedom.
I was reminded in a devotional just a few days ago that there is another set of stars and stripes that should be a part of our celebration of independence. They come from scripture and were spoken of long before our Nation ever existed. Remember the scripture from Matthew 2:2 where the wise men ask “Where is He that is born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the east and have come to worship Him.” How about the scripture from 1 Peter 2:24 that “He bore our sins in His own body on the tree” and “by His stripes we are healed.”
As we celebrate our Nation’s independence with family, food and fireworks, may we as followers of Christ also remember to celebrate the “stars and stripes” from scripture which serve as a reminder of the freedom we have in Christ.
Have a jubilant July and as always…………KEEP SINGING!
