The Pastor’s Pen!!!

I feel like we almost skipped Thanksgiving, we went straight to the Holidays & the Shopping Season. The world is trying to do away with Christmas; they call it a “Holiday Tree.” People spend so much money decorating, giving expensive gifts, partying & forgetting the real Reason for the Season, not taking the time to celebrate our Savior’s Birth. Let’s get “Past the Tinsel to the Truth,” the Truth about Christmas.

The Truth is - God became Man at Christmas. The Word became Flesh (John 1:14). God became man, God Incarnate, in human flesh, “God with us.” God did something Unexpected! Mary didn’t expect to be the Mother of the Messiah; the Shepherds didn’t expect God, or the angels, to appear to them. The Jews didn’t expect the Messiah to be born in a stable. God sent the Angels to tell the Shepherds a Savior is born, a Savior for all the world. Despite the Trappings, Christmas is all about what God did, the Son of God born in a manger in Bethlehem.

The Truth is – Everything about Christmas is Significant. The Message & the Meaning of His Birth are significant, “Good News, a Savior is born to you.” The Tree & the Tinsel symbolizing His Birth are also significant, Evergreen Tree for Everlasting Life & Lights because Jesus is the Light of the world. However, the day we celebrate is not significant, but we celebrate the Virgin Birth because Jesus is the Greatest Gift of All.

The Truth is – Christmas is All about Jesus. The angel said, “Call His Name Jesus, for He shall Save His people from their Sins” (Matt 1:21). His Name is Jesus, “Jehovah is our Salvation,” in Hebrew Yeshua, (Joshua) in Greek Insous (hey-zous). Jesus meant Salvation to the Shepherds, Worship for the Wise Men, what does He mean to you? Christmas also means if He came once, He’s Coming Again! That’s all part of His Promise.

Stop settling for Traditions for Tradition’s sake, “we’ve always done it that way.” Why? Move beyond the Christmas Trappings, the commercialization, shopping, parties, get Past the Tinsel to the Truth. The Truth is Jesus is the Reason for the Season! No matter who tries to deny that Fact, Christmas is All About Jesus.

Carol's Notes

Before I put the Thanksgiving season behind me for this year, let me say a heartfelt “thank you” to my church family for your prayers, many cards and acts of kindness in the loss of my mother. I will thank my God with every remembrance of her, for the ways she made our house a home, her love for the Lord and her being such a prayer warrior. I am thankful to the Lord for relieving her pain in such a marvelous way but I will miss her greatly. Thank you friends for your love and prayers – they will help carry me out of this valley back to the mountaintop.

I had one of those reminders from God that he is working even in what we might call “small stuff”. I had not read the daily devotionals from our “Open Windows” since Mother had died. I picked it up the other day to see what the reading was on the day she died and much to my surprise the title of the devotional for that day was “A Future Family Reunion”. I could hardly believe my eyes! What a beautiful reminder to me that we had only said “see you later” because we have the assurance of our Lord that we will be reunited. I can’t wait for that reunion to see my parents again!

Please mark your calendars for Sunday night, December 20th. Come join us for a beautiful presentation of “Light of the World”, a story of how the Light of God’s love pierced the darkness and brought hope to a hopeless world. What a beautiful way to begin the week we celebrated our Savior’s birth.

Bill and I wish each of you a “Merry Christmas” and hope you will enjoy special time with your families. In the hustle and bustle let’s not forget that Jesus truly is the reason and meaning of this season.

Keep a song in your heart!

Obedience in the midst of Uncertainty

Hebrews 11 is one of the most pivotal & important passages of Scripture. The writer tells of the amazing faith of some of the Old Testament followers of God. He shows the importance of living by faith & trusting God no matter what He is calling you to do. The best example of this is Abraham. Abraham was called by God to leave Ur & go on to a land that the Lord had promised him. Abraham, a man of faith, takes his possessions, gets up & moves out, trusting God will provide for him. Hebrews describes Abraham’s faith, “By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.” Abraham went even though He did not know where he was going or what exactly God had called him to do.

As you may have heard, December will be my last month at Trinity Baptist Church as the Youth Pastor at Collide Student Ministries. I have spent a lot of time teaching the youth to be obedient to the Lord & now it is time for me to be obedient to Him by serving in a different ministry. Over Thanksgiving break, I met with a Church in Las Cruces, New Mexico, about becoming their Senior Pastor. It is a small church with great potential. I truly believe that the Lord is going to do an amazing work there. I will find out within the next week or two & look forward to seeing what the Lord has done.

I must admit though, that even though I am excited about the possibility of ending up in New Mexico & building a Church, I am scared to death. I am afraid of the unknown & not sure what the Lord would have, yet I know that to truly follow Him, I need to be obedient no matter what the cost. For me to stay & minister (while it would still be good) would be direct disobedience to God & possibly put me out of His will. For this reason, like Abraham, I must go & pursue what the Lord has called me to do. Please pray for Shelley & I as we continue to serve the Lord in wherever He would lead us.

One of the greatest things I think a youth pastor can experience is to know that there is another leader to carry the torch & continue the ministry. I am so excited to know that Ethan will take the torch & lead Collide Student Ministries to the next level. Please pray for him & the rest of the leadership team as they serve the Lord through serving our youth.

Finally, I would like to thank Pastor Vernon & everyone at Trinity Baptist Church for the part you have played in my life. Without you, I don’t know where I would be in ministry or I don’t know if I would be as prepared as I need to be. Thank you so much for all your prayers & encouragement & I am just as excited to see what God is going to do through Trinity & Collide Student Ministries in the future.
